Roland Brasil – What we learned on the 808 Day.

WHO IN THE MUSIC INDUSTRY HAS NEVER LISTENED ABOUT THE LEGENDARY DRUM MACHINE ROLAND TR-808? WHAT MORE IT COULD TEACH US? – 808 DAY ROLAND BRASIL.

Roland Brasil presented the #808day 2019, an event produced with love for music and it’s possibilites.

Created in 1980 and discontinued three years after, the TR-808 had only 12.000 units produced.

What would be a failure, turned up into one of the all time biggest musical instrument, influencing Hip-Hop, electronic music, pop music and its strands.

It’s legacy continues until today stronger than never.

The 808 Day was an event produced by the bold team from Roland Brasil, to reflect about the big influence of the instrument but also to talk about the history of brazilian Hip-Hop and electronic music.

It happened in the Red Bull Station São Paulo, with the inspiring view of the Anhangabaú’s Valley in city’s downtown. The place is incredible itself as a place to develop music, dance, culture and entrepreneurship.

I was invited by my good friend Mido Hammoud, Roland AIRA’s product specialist, to make part of it and to bring the presence of Tropical Club & Klubinho. So I went to check!

THE PANELS – 808 DAY – ROLAND BRASIL

I’ve watched all the three panels offered. The first one was presented by the Hip-Hop legend, Thaíde, talking with Cláudia Assef, Renato Cohen and Rappin Hood about the early days of electronic music, pop and Hip-Hop.

Second one was about the music business around events, music production, manufacturers and online platforms.

Least, but not last, Laércio leaded the final panel about Live Act and its own particulars.

THE TRUE LESSONS FROM THE LEGENDS

The content of the panels was rich, but the global perception that got really into me was more around the music culture and its importance.

What we are experiencing is still an avant garde movement, spreading the true values of Hip-Hop and raves culture: Peace, Love, Unity, Respect and a lot of hard work to do.

“O que alimenta o seu espírito, sempre vai ser a música” – Thaíde

Before I let you with more pictures, I’ll end this text talking about my question in the first panel (for all of them, Thaíde, Rappin Hood, Renato and Cláudia): “What your family said when you told them you would be a musician, a rapper, a DJ? Was it hard to convince them?”.

I remember Renato Cohen saying “It wasn’t so difficult, because my mom already knew the importance of all that music stuff for me” but what Thaíde said almost made me cry, and it was something near:

Sometimes in your life you won’t be able to live and get paid as a musician. Maybe you need a job, maybe your family don’t recognize it as a career. You need to have a job to pay the bills, to feed your pocket and your body… But WHAT FEEDS YOUR SPIRIT, ALWAYS GONNA BE MUSIC. And you need to keep making music, and keep living it to the fullest. If you do that, one day you’re gonna get paid by your music and from this day and on, you can feed yourself only from music.

NOTE: I didn’t recorded the presentation, this wasn’t the words he used precisely but was the message spreaded on Rolando Brasil (808 Day).
